A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
