Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
