In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
